Bug stings and bites often result in immediate swelling of the face and feet in dogs and cats. Since dogs are prone to bite at the offender, they typically exhibit lip and facial swelling. Cats, however, bat at the culprit and result with swollen paws. The area swollen around the bites is generally massive if the animal is allergic, but the swelling itself does not cause pain. In contrast, an infection takes time to develop, is painful, hot to the touch, and appears tighter. Swelling that is a result of an allergy will be squishy and soft.

The location is very important as well. If it is at the head, face, or neck and the victim has an allergy, emergency attention must be sought. The reaction could cause the airways to restrict, affecting breathing.

Many people inquire if it is appropriate to give a dog Benadryl who is having an allergic reaction in a remote area such as the woods and quick medical assistance would not be feasible. The first step would be to call the veterinarian for advice. If you know you animal is allergic, discuss the best course of action at an annual visit to be prepared for such occurrences.

Benadryl while seemingly safe is not for every pet. There are adverse side effects associated with usage. If your dog has medical conditions such as glaucoma, prostatic disease, cardiovascular disease, hyperthyroid disease, and other conditions, use extreme cautions. Benadryl is likely to react with any other drugs the dog is taken. Remember, many over the counter drugs can be toxic and fatal when given to pets.
