Choosing a Pet
When choosing a pet you need to take many different things into account. The breed, size, and attitude of the pet you bring into your home will undoubtedly have some effect on everyone in your home. Just as bringing a new person into the home will have a major effect on everyone in the family, so will bringing home a new pet.
Large Homes & Pets
Families with small homes need to be sure to consider the amount of space that they have available for their pet. If the home is very small, you should consider adopting a small pet so that it (and you and everyone else) has plenty of space to move around without the home becoming crowded.

If you have a large home, this may not be an issue. If you have a large yard that you plan to keep your pet in, this shouldn't be a problem for you either. As long as your yard has plenty of room for your pet to play and walk around, they will be quite happy. Be prepared, though, to let them into the house when there is a frightening lightening storm or snow. Pets must be kept safe too.
Pet Compatibility
If you have children in the home, you should consider a pet that isn't known to be aggressive. You probably should shy away from dogs like pit bulls, although some families do own them without incident.
Our San Francisco Vet Clinic Can Help
Soon-to-be pet owners should talk to everyone in the family about getting the new pet and make it a family decision to be sure everyone is on board and excited about the new pet's arrival. You need to be sure no one is allergic to the animal or especially afraid of it. Some people are allergic to cats, for example, and some people are deathly afraid of snakes. These things need to be taken into account when considering what type of pet to choose.
Call our San Francisco vet clinic to find out more. We can help you decide what type of pet to adopt, where to adopt it from, and inform you of everything else you need to know for a successful pet-addition to your family.
