Preparing for a New Pet

Preparing for a new pet in your home is a major move that you need to think seriously about. If your pet arrives and you are not prepared for its arrival, you and the pet could be in for some big surprises.

Pet Restroom Breaks

Be sure to be prepared for your pets restroom breaks. This means you need to know where your pet is going to use the restroom and how you plan to handle the disposal. Of course, if your new pet is going to live outside in your yard, there really isn't much to do in the way of preparation, but you at least know where they're going to be handling their business and how you plan to react (don't step in it).

Cats

But if you're getting a new cat that will live in your home, you definitely need to buy a litter box and some litter before the cats arrives. In fact, you should also pour plenty of litter into the litter box and place it in a location that is out of the way. For one, it's going to stink. The other reason you should put their litter box in a private location is for your cat's privacy. They, like you, don't want to be watched while they are using the restroom. This is a private act even for animals and they will be much happier if they are provided with this privacy.

Dogs

Soon-to-be dog owners need to think about where their dog is going to use the restroom too. If your dog is going to live inside your home, you will need to have a schedule for taking the dog outside for these restroom breaks. If you live in the city, you need to pick up their poop so no one else steps in it. If it's your own backyard, you're likely to walk around it with no problems. But you definitely don't want your new dog using the restroom inside your home, so be prepared to send them outside on occasion.
